This group of 120+ science professionals provide toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, and related support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals and microbes.

The Microbiologist’s project work would support federal agencies (such as U.S. EPA), state agencies, and private sector clients in assessing the human health impacts of pollutants. Specific tasks would involve qualitative and quantitative analyses that form the basis of human health hazard, exposure, and risk assessments, particularly in the area of water quality.

This position is fully remote within the US; hybrid opportunities are also available in Durham, NC, or Reston, VA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support and provide technical leadership on microbial water-related projects, including:

  • Applying microbial risk assessment guidance to develop water quality criteria for ambient and recreational waters.

  • Evaluating water quality and health effects data generated from an epidemiology study.

  • Collating data and preparing screening analyses on hazard identification, exposure, and human health risk for microbial contaminants.

  • Conducting quantitative microbial risk assessments (QMRA), including related dose response modeling and statistical analyses.

  • Reviewing and preparing summaries of peer-reviewed literature on sources, enumeration methodologies, morbidity, mortality and sequelae of illness, and, available dose-response information on microbial indicators, pathogens, and toxic substances of microbial origin (such as cyanotoxins).

  • Reviewing and summarizing environmental fate and transport data for microbes.

  • Developing figures, tables, or other graphics to display the array of available data for a microbial pollutant to assist in risk communication, facilitate QMRA, and improve the transparency of health effects support documents.

  • Preparing, evaluating, and revise technical guidance documents, health effects support documents, or health advisories for microbial pollutants in water, sediments, and biosolids.

  • Task and project management, including interaction and correspondence with clients and mentoring other technical staff.

  • Review of work produced by others to provide expert-level corrections and content.

  • Development of technical publications and guidance, presentations for conferences, and proposal sections.

Note this position does not involve hands-on laboratory or field work.

What you need to have:

  • PhD in environmental microbiology, environmental health, environmental engineering, biostatistics, or related subject with focus on microbiology.

  • 1+ year of relevant experience in environmental microbiology, microbial risk assessment, or a closely related field.

What we would love for you to have:

  • The ideal candidate will have:

  • 3+ years of experience working for a government agency such as EPA or NIH in a post-doctoral or other relevant capacity.

  • Proficiency in quantitative and statistical skills including hands-on experience with statistical software packages (e.g., R, Python, SAS, or STATA)

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software suite

  • Proactive and problem-solving approach to challenges with attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work collaboratively under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
